Good-bye January!

Saturday, January 31, 2015

January is over…we are 1/12 of the way done with the year…

It is also Kimm’s last day in her 30s — unfortunately it wasn’t quite the day she wanted.  First of all, she woke up with a huge migraine (which thankfully went away with some Exedrin).  Then she had a massive nosebleed (she hasn’t had one of those in quite a while…not sure if it was the change in temp or what??).  And then she had a little upset stomach all day 😦

Hopefully she will be feeling much better tomorrow….the first day of her 40s!!!!!

Besides all that there is really not much going on.  Work went by fine.  Although there was a nurse that was going for surgery this morning.  Turns out she had fallen coming into the building a couple of days ago and fractured her wrist (her face was pretty swollen too!).  I’ve always said those stairs are an accident waiting to happen, especially when they get wet.  I’m going to have to be extra careful now when I come in.

My cleanse is over!!!!  I THOROUGHLY enjoyed a veggie burger with fried onions and some tator tots tonight.  I was “mmmm….mmmmm-ing” my way through the whole meal 🙂

Good-bye January…here’s to a great February!

January Accomplishments

Friday, January 30, 2015

First of all, I am feeling a bit better today, health “sickness”-wise.  Always a good thing 🙂

I’m back to work tonight for two…but then it will be Kimm’s birthday and I’m wicked excited to celebrate (even if she is dreading the big 4-0!)

As I’m typing, I feel as if my computer is on its last legs…it’s been running really slow lately, overheating a lot, and making some pretty crazy noises!  I hope that I can save some stuff off it before it dies…

Anyways, I wanted to just jot down what I felt were my accomplishments for this month as the month is over in one day (!)

*I got back to drinking 8 cups of water/day

*I have filed paperwork 1 hour/week EVERY SINGLE WEEK!

*I read two books (almost done with a third…) — this is a little off my goal of 52 books/year but I know that when I’m on vacation I’ll be reading a lot more

*I’ve worked up to doing 40 sit ups/day

*I did a 2 week cleanse

*I have gotten into a routine with washing/changing the sheets/dusting/sweeping the bedroom (every Saturday that I have off!)

*I have cleaned the TUB (dreaded task!!) EVERY WEEK

*I have not broken my French streak on Duolingo 🙂

Goals that are on the agenda for February include…

…getting back into knitting!

…starting weight lifting again

…trying some new recipes (crock pot, smoothies, main meals, desserts, all of it!!)

…starting to watch LOST (the series)

…dropping some stuff off at Saver’s

…getting our freezer for the basement

…buying a rug for the living room

Feeling under the weather…

Thursday, January 29, 2015

I woke up with a bit of a sniffle and nose stuffiness that I haven’t been able to shake all day.  I think I’m in the beginning stages of a cold and that is something that I really need to try to fight off!

Besides cleaning the bathrooms, making bread and having a short finance meeting, I mostly relaxed today.

I was finally able to catch up on some reading again…I miss it when I can’t fit it in.

Dinner was the perfect “feeling sick” meal…vegetable soup.  It did warm me all the way from the inside.

Now I’m resting some more before watching our Switched at Birth.  Eyes are burning!!

Happy to be home!

Wednesday, January 28, 2015

I made it through my 3 days on and all the snow 🙂

And now I’m just so HAPPY to have two days off and spend time at home!

Big plans for tonight…couch time while watching a couple of episodes of Switched at Birth (snacks will be involved, of course…green smoothie and cashews for me, popcorn and peanut butter M&M’s for Kimm…yep, the cleanse is still going strong for me — only 2 more days — despite MANY temptations at work!)

Plus extra sleep tonight…cannot wait.

Historic snowstorm?

Tuesday, January 27, 2015

The historic snow storm of 2015…that never was (at least not in our area).

I went to work last night and made it in fine (our new car tires drive like a dream!!…the plows hadn’t really gone out by then and with about 1-2 inches fallen by then, everyone on the highway was doing about 25-30 mph while I could comfortably do 40!)

Throughout the night of working I kept peeking outside to see what was going on.  There was a lot of wind, but not much snow accumulation it seemed.  We had over 50 people stay overnight at the hospital (some people who had to work in the morning and some who stayed after their 3-11 shift).  When the morning people started coming in and said the roads were not that bad I decided to call Kimm once she got up and see if the streets were plowed by our house.  When she said “yes” I made the decision to drive home.  The highway was actually worse in the morning than it had been driving in.  Even though they had done some plowing, there was still a bunch of snow left so it was hard to see the lines — and there were a few slippery spots.

BUT…I made it home safely, thank goodness.

By the time I got home, Kimm had the entire driveway plowed and was working on the last of the shoveling.  I grabbed my shovel and helped with the rest.  I think we got about 6-8 inches.

After getting up from sleeping, Kimm told me she had only gone out one more time and there was about an inch on the ground.

I feel incredibly lucky that we were spared and the drive in and back was made safely.  And because of that I got to sleep in my own bed, take a shower in the comfort of my home, eat dinner with my sweetie and snuggle on the couch while watching a Switched at Birth!!

Now I just have one more night on and then a few off.  Of course we are predicted to get more snow this weekend when I work 🙂

So it has started to snow.

Not too much accumulation so far, maybe about 1/2 an inch.  I’m going to be leaving a bit early for work tonight, maybe 15 minutes.

And I’m prepared to stay until my shift tomorrow night if I need to!

Food is packed: 3 bananas, 4 apples, a can of almonds, a can of cashews, a bag of baby carrots, a container of hummus, a container of rice and beans, several tea bags, water.

Clothing is packed: extra set of scrubs (along with toiletries to get ready for work tomorrow).

Misc packed: Kindle, iPad, phone, knitting.

Car is packed: extra shovel.

I’m set for whatever happens.  I’m going to be in contact with Kimm during the day.  Supposedly the heavy part of the snow will be done falling by noon.  If the plows get out and get the job done and our streets are plowed, I’ll come home for dinner and a shower before work tomorrow…if not, like I said, I’m prepared 🙂

The calm before the storm?

Sunday, January 25, 2015

The sun was out today.  All the snow from yesterday started to melt.

That might not matter, since we’re expected to get 2-3 feet of snow Monday into Tuesday??!!

And since I have to work tonight, Monday and Tuesday, I REALLY hope that prediction is a little over-inflated 🙂

I had to do our regular shopping today since I could not go yesterday with the snow and boy, the stores were packed.  I guess everyone needed something before the big storm.  It was a little crazy.  I was so glad to get home.

For now, I’m just crossing my fingers that the weather will not be that horrible.

Snow day.

Saturday, January 24, 2015

I woke up today to no Kimm in bed and snow drifting from the sky.

Kimm was not in bed because she had a horrible stomach ache during the night and could not sleep.  She said she had gone down to the couch around 3:30 am — I NEVER HEARD HER!

The snow kept falling and falling…we ended up with about 4-5 inches.  I shoveled before lunch…the pathways were not bad, pretty light and easy.  The driveway was a completely different story…HEAVY.  So I actually got the darn snow blower started on my own!  But then I had to go ask Kimm how to work it (it wasn’t shooting out the snow…turns out I did not have the handles fully engaged 🙂 …)    It was a little rough going at first learning how to manipulate the machine, and really never got EASY but at least a little bit better.  And no lifting of the heavy snow!

Feeling uncertain about starting the snow blower made me think about how I really need to step it up and learn how to do all the things around here that I don’t know how to do…I should be as comfortable with starting and using the snow blower/lawn mower/remote control as I am with cooking and preparing the nightly meal!

The rest of the day flew by…I was on fire!

— 4 loads of laundry (including sheets)

— changing the sheets on the bed

— dusting the bedroom and swiffering the floor

— got caught up on reading all my blogs

— read for about an hour

— and for fun…we’ve already watched 4 episodes of Switched at Birth (that show is SO good)

Supposedly no snow tomorrow so I’ll have to finish doing the rest of the stuff I want to get done before working tomorrow night (grocery shopping, finance meeting).  I really hope Kimm feels better by then…fingers crossed.

I have to say…even though the snow is a pain to get rid of, it’s awful pretty coming down and I LOVE trees with a fresh coating of pristine white 🙂

Blueberry Pie Smoothie

Friday, January 23, 2015

I made it through my three nights on…cheers for me!!

After getting my rest, I was up and at ’em.  It was another beautiful, sunny day so Kimm and I bundled up (I mean, it IS still winter), leashed up Izzy and headed out for a walk.  Again, it is just SO nice to be out in nature.  I tried taking a few pictures but my phone tells me there is no room.  Oh boy, there is a project for this weekend…delete stuff on my phone to make more room!

Dinner was good — quesadillas again for Kimm and I made a warm rice salad with broccoli, celery, sesame seeds, and chickpeas that I am going to tweak the recipe just slightly and then post here.

After dinner French and blog reading and FB stalking 🙂

Now we are about to watch a couple of episodes of Switched at Birth…can’t wait.  And with it, our snacks…Kimm is of course doing popcorn and I will be having what I’ve been having for the past few nights…a blueberry smoothie that truly does taste like blueberry pie!  I had done some “Pinteresting” earlier this week and found a few recipes for Blueberry Pie smoothies and I morphed the ideas into the perfect smoothie for me.  Even Kimm agrees…it REALLY does taste like blueberry pie!  You can’t go wrong with something that is incredibly healthy for you, yet tastes like a decadent dessert!

Blueberry Pie Smoothie

1/4 cup walnuts

1/3 cup frozen blueberries

1 frozen banana

1 cup almond milk (I use unsweetened, you can also use any other milk product here)

dash cinnamon

2 ice cubes

To make:

Blend all except ice cubes in a high-powered blender (ex: Vitamix, Ninja, etc) until very smooth, about 1 minute.  Then add 2 ice cubes and blend until incorporated (mixing until really smooth will warm up the ingredients of the smoothie…it won’t be hot or anything — more like room temp — but I just find I like it better when it is colder, so the ice cubes at the end just bring it back to a nice cold temperature…it is best to blend until really smooth because blueberries take a while to break down!)

ENJOY!!!  It is the walnuts and cinnamon that work to give this smoothie the hints of “pie” 🙂

I love it!!

Next week I’m going to attempt a carrot cake smoothie…can’t wait for the adventure!

Fresh Air.

Thursday, January 22, 2015

I kind of didn’t sleep that well today…lots of tossing and turning and getting up to go to the bathroom and my mind just wouldn’t stop (hate that!)

So when I rolled over and saw the clock was 4 pm, I figured I would rather get up and DO something rather than unsuccessfully try to sleep some more.

Kimm was reading a book and so I took Izzy out before she ate.  And I noticed that the weather was kind of nice and it was sunny!

When I came back in I suggested to Kimm that maybe we take a walk because it seemed like the weather was pretty good.  She agreed and after getting myself dressed, we were off!

Yes, there were parts of the road that were still covered with ice so we had to be careful walking, and yes, the wind was a little chillier than I had originally thought, and yes, of course the sun disappeared before we stepped outside…but

the fresh air moving through my lungs felt GLORIOUS

the pre-sunset views were beautiful

Izzy was in her glory, sniffing away at everything and was so cute to watch

moving felt wonderful

All in all, it was a super walk and made me feel so happy 🙂

Dinner was good — quesadillas for Kimm (which she said were some of my best) and a big salad for me (spinach, celery, broccoli, chickpeas, sesame seeds).

Now I’m getting a little sleepy but a shower will wake me up and then time for our show and then my nap before work.  Only one more night!!
