ER Visit

Tuesday, May 31, 2016

Wow, WHAT a last day of the month.

Got home from work and Kimm was still not feeling so good.  At this point, since the holiday weekend was over, she called her doctor’s office to see if she could get an appointment with her PCP.  Luckily, she was able to get in, for early afternoon.

I told her I would sleep and then go with her to her appointment.

Her doctor’s appointment was pretty fast.  We explained to the doctor what Kimm had been experiencing and she did an exam.  She felt as we did that it was probably her gallbladder.  She explained that she would need blood work and an ultrasound but that because it was getting later in the day it would not be able to be completed at the outpatient office.  She recommended to head to the ER.

So that’s what we did.

I was hoping that it would be fairly quick, but there we were not so lucky.

We checked in at 3:40 pm.  And we were in triage five minutes later.  That part WAS fast.

It took another 2 hours to get IN to the ED.  And that is even with me working there.

Kimm got an IV, some pain meds and anti-nausea meds and some blood work drawn.  The doctor was in to see her and ordered an ultrasound.

We were over to the ultrasound by 6:20 pm.  Unfortunately the tech doing the exam said she could not see anything.

Which the doctor confirmed.

But because he did not want to leave anything uncovered he did order a CT scan of the abdomen, which happened about an hour later.

And then there was MORE waiting for the results of the CT scan.

And in the mean time I was getting a little nervous because I had to come back to work that night.  I didn’t want to call out because I had just come off of vacation.

We finally got the results (everything NEGATIVE…so frustrating) and we left the hospital about 9:30 pm.  Which left just enough time for us to get home, for me to shower and get changed and eat a bite before heading right back to the hospital.

Again, what a last day of the month.

Crazy Memorial Day.

My first night back at work was pretty good.

BUT…the drama BEFORE going into work was not so good.

We had just gotten done eating dinner and I did the dishes and Kimm was doing her after dinner chores, when she started complaining of not feeling well.  She said she felt dizzy and lightheaded.  I thought it had something to do with taking stronger pain medication for a lingering headache and so the nurse in me immediately checked her vitals (BP and HR — both were fine).  So I quickly went to take my shower and when I came back downstairs Kimm was lying on the couch, just looking very much not herself.

I started watching a show on the computer and not even 5 minutes in, I see Kimm sit up, she looks horrible, I ask what is wrong, she says, “I just don’t feel right.”  I attempt to get her up to go to the bathroom and she is so weak and dizzy it is tough to get her there.  At this point I have only about an hour before she I have to go to work and I CANNOT call out because I just had ten days off!

So the solution is to call her parents and see if they can come over because I just don’t feel safe having her at home by herself and the animals.  Thankfully they are able to come and get over here about 15 minutes before I have to leave for work.  In the meantime, Kimm is complaining of nausea, chills, and abdominal pain — to the right upper side and middle.  Immediately I start thinking…”gallbladder??” and begin googling!  Yep, turns out that many of her symptoms are matching an acute gallbladder attack. When her mom gets here she says that it runs in her side of the family!

And suddenly all the digestive issues and stomach pain Kimm has been experiencing intermittently over the past couple of weeks begins to make sense.

What probably brought it on last night was our lovely meal choices…potato chips and dip for an afternoon snack, fries for dinner, followed by ice cream…everything fried and fatty that you can think of!

So Kimm did start feeling slightly better and her parents left after midnight and I was glad to see her when I got home this morning.

She’s had water and saltines during the day and a fairly bland meal of pasta and pasta sauce for dinner.  So far, not worse.

The plan is for her to make an appointment with her doctor this week.  So who knows, maybe a gallbladder removal is in her future.

Then as for me, I had HORRIBLE period cramps today…to the point that even the prescribed Percocet was doing little…I could not sleep well at all and probably got a combined total of a few hours max.

So tonight at work should be interesting.

A nap before work is definitely forthcoming.

End of vacation…

Sunday, May 29, 2016

Well, ten days off sure does go by fast…

My first vacation of the year is over 😦

I’m back to work for tonight…10 pm to 8 am.

Today was spent…

1 — getting a new air conditioner for the downstairs since ours was NOT working yesterday (seriously!!!! — it had been only 4 years that we had the old one — the compressor was not working) — we got a new one room unit for $120 at Rocky’s and it brought the humidity down tremendously which helped SO MUCH.

2 — buying stuff from Target and Old Navy (taking advantage of Memorial Day sales to get some new shorts and some outside decorating stuff…spent way too much it seems but you only live once, right?)

3 — preparing myself mentally for work (that’s a big one)

Hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day!

Done packing.

Ugh.  All I can say is…I HATE PACKING.

But the majority of it is done now.

A few thunderstorms today…of course it is freaking out Izzy.  We put in the AC and good thing too because we are due for some really warm days next week.

I’m looking forward to hopefully a good night’s sleep and then a hot shower in the morning before getting the last of everything together.

Tomorrow night at this time I’ll be in SHEBOYGAN.

A lot of hair.

Only ONE more day of work before my vacation to see my family in WI!!

Hopefully (fingers crossed) it will be an okay night.  This morning when I left, there were 104 patients…that’s a lot!

Kind of restless sleeping again.  What is going on??

Up at 4 pm and right on our walk…it was in the 70s so it was quite warm by the end.  But at least it wasn’t as humid as it could have been.

By 5pm the guy to detail our car was here.  Kimm said to me…”he looks quite young.”  Turns out he was a FRESHMAN in high school.  So glad that we decided we were going to pay him.  He told Kimm he was working all through high school so that he could buy a car.

He was here for about 2 and 1/2 hours.  He did a pretty good job, but not excellent.  I think there was just TOO MUCH IZZY hair to deal with 🙂  We know that it is SO hard to vacuum up.  I think if we want it done even better we will have to get it professionally done.  But for now, it is definitely better than it was…and we didn’t have to do it.

Now I’m going to finish watching DWTS (I REALLY hope that Jodi doesn’t get voted off…I loved her first dance yesterday!)

ONE MORE NIGHT…

Bad luck?

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

I was SO SO SO tired at work last night…more tired than I have ever been I think…and for no apparent reason.  I’m not liking this!  Believe me, bed felt so good.  But even with being so tired, I just slept so-so.

Today we had set up an appointment to get our car detailed by a young college kid who is doing it on the side (who got quite a lot of good reviews on the quality of his work on the Agawam Forum on FB).  However, when the appointed time came…nothing!  De ja vu…seriously. So Kimm texted him.  Turns out he forgot about the appointment. SERIOUSLY!!  Who does stuff for other people and doesn’t have a good way of keeping track of appointments!!!!  However, he did say he could come tomorrow and do it free of charge.  I guess that will be an expensive lesson for him.  And seriously, do we just have bad luck??

Tonight I’m on with my co-supervisor.  I foresee lots of coffee 🙂

Windy again.

Monday, April 16, 2016

My first night on was busy, but not horrible.  It made the night go by fast.  I stopped at Stop and Shop on the way home and was in bed by 9:30 am.  I slept so-so.

The walk was WINDY, but sunny.  Kimm was a busy beaver outside today.  She 1) mowed the lawn, 2) took out the rotted raised bed garden, 3) dug out a rooted plant in the front of the house, 4) staked up the peonies.  The yard looks great.  I just wish it didn’t take her 4 hours to do it and leave her with a sore back!

Veggie burgers and fries for dinner.  A nice hot shower.

And now I’m ready to watch a House of Cards before work.  Here’s hoping for another good night.

The weather changes fast.

Sunday, May 15, 2016

It’s hard to believe that yesterday I was wearing shorts.

Today I took a walk with Izzy in my winter coat.  YUP.  That’s New England weather for you.

Not much to report today.

I read and knitted.  We did a finance meeting.  Kimm had a stomach ache so it was just me and Izzy on the walk.  In a WINTER COAT.

Cheeseburg salad for dinner.  Now I’m showered and ready to start the first of my four nights on.

Crossing my fingers it’s not too bad at work.  I’ve been tired today so an easier night would be appreciated on my first night back.

First grill out of the season!

Saturday, May 14, 2016

An absolutely GORGEOUS day out…there was such a nice breeze…we had all the windows open enjoying it all day long.

I had such a nice, relaxing day…I loved it.

I was able to read at breakfast.  Then I knit while watching last weeks DWTS — so sad to see Kim Fields gone (I could tell she really was not happy about it).  Now I can’t wait to see next week…only SIX left.

Kimm was doing laundry all day…she was such a hard worker.

I painted my toenails 🙂

We had a surprise visit from old friends (I used to live by then when I first moved here and lived in Ware).  We had not seen them in about five years…they happened to be in the neighborhood and called to see if they could stop in…so glad they did.  Turns out they got married!!  They had been together for 21 years…just so, so happy for them.  Hopefully we’ll be able to see them a little bit more now.

And then we decided to do our first grill out of the season…we just couldn’t pass up on the beautiful day…especially since it’s supposed to rain for the next couple and I’m working for the next four…and then off to WI.

Food just always tastes better off the grill…loved those grilled veggie kabobs!

I just watched this week’s Survivor…so surprised to see Joe evacuated…and just like that we are at a Final Four…I can’t wait to see who is the Final Three!

We’re going to finish off the night with more ice cream and House of Cards.

Rainy night in.

Friday, May 13, 2016

Well, Friday the 13th did not disappoint.  I had a feeling when I was going into work last night that it might be a little crazy at work…and I was right.  It all started with a code that turned out not to be a code but rather a question seizure, but regardless, right off the bat, rushing up to the floors to start the night.  It continued on as ICU got a very critical patient and I was helping them as much as I could throughout the night.  Needless to say, I was completely ready to go home when the morning came.

There was no walk after I got up because it was raining.  Kimm was smart…she had taken Izzy on a walk earlier!

But that was fine with me…it just let me rest my ankle (especially since it was bothering me again — I had run up to the “code” the night before and that definitely aggravated it).  So I just rested in the chair after dinner and watched Survivor…it was a good one.  I can’t wait to see how this season plays out!

The night ended with ice cream and House of Cards!
