Goodbye July

Sunday, July 31, 2016

July is over tonight…the hottest month of the year thus far.

My first night back at work was pretty good…nothing too crazy happening, just busy enough to make the night go by fast.

Sleeping during the day again was fair…somehow I kept waking up.

Dinner was simple — French Toast (two with white sugar and butter…yumm!!! and one with syrup…)

Now time for a shower and back to work.

Back at it…

Vacation is over…

I’m back to work tonight.

It was another lazy day.  Reading, watching Orange is the New Black, playing Cookie Jam.

Now for two on, one off, two on.  It’ll be interesting to see what news is going on at the hospital.

Summer Vacation {Day 8}

The LAST full day of vacation 😦

Woke up to a drizzly start…

But it cleared up pretty quick.

Sun shining in, but HIGH in humidity.  Thank goodness for AC.

A lazy day.

Reading, watching shows, getting pizza out.

A perfect last day…

Summer Vacation {Day 7}

Thursday, July 28, 2016

This vacation is just FLYING by 😦

Tonight we made plans to take Kimm’s parents out to eat to thank them for helping out — taking Izzy out when we were at the ED last month, picking stuff up for us at BJ’s when they go, mending Kimm’s clothes, and all the other stuff that I’m not remembering.

They wanted to go to Cracker Barrel!  And then we were going to have a game night after!

I decided to make chocolate chip cookies to take to game night so after breakfast I made the dough and then stuck it in the fridge to chill.  After lunch I made up the cookies…they smelled SO good.

Cracker Barrel was so-so for us — Kimm’s dad got the Thursday special which was turkey with stuffing and gravy, her mom got French toast with eggs and bacon, Kimm got French toast with Cheesy Hashbrown casserole and I got buttermilk pancakes with Cheesy Hashbrown casserole.   The best part of the meal was the cheesy hashbrown casserole!!!  But both my pancakes and Kimm’s French toast had an oily grilled quality from the grill that was not very tasty.  SIGH.

But game night was SO MUCH FUN.  We played Apples to Apples and Scruples.  Lots of laughs 🙂  Snacks were so addicting — potato chips and dip, Cheetos, chocolate chip cookies.

We left about 11:30 pm and crawled up into bed we were so tired!

Summer Vacation {Day 6}

14 years.

That’s how long Kimm and I have been together!

As I stated on FB, it’s not always been easy (what relationship is?), but it HAS been completely worth it.

Here’s to MANY more…

As for “our” day…

We had a simple, but yummy breakfast (waffles!).

We relaxed a bit and then showered, then headed out for lunch to El Forestero (our favorite Mexican place…got our usual…guacamole, veggie quesadillas…plus I tried their Pina Colada and I have to say it was probably THE BEST one I’ve ever had!).

Home to rest our stuffed bellies…and we watched a movie (The Devil Wears Prada).

And then it was out for another drive (this time to the Florence area…we were gone for THREE hours!…it was nice to see something new…it was amazing how in the mountains the temp drops considerably…at one point it was almost 15 degrees cooler!)

When we got home, we made some popcorn and watched the LAST episode of Season Four of House of Cards…now we have another 7 months to wait until the next season!

It was a REALLY nice day 🙂

Summer Vacation {Day 5}

Tuesday, July 26, 2016

We headed out for donuts today…Mrs. Murphy’s.  Again, I’m not sure WHAT is going on, but the donuts tasted just okay.  I think I may like the donuts from Donut Dip slightly better!  One of these days I’ll have to get some from each place on the same day to do a taste test 🙂  We also got iced coffees and that too was a little bit of a bust…we asked for them light and sweet but they were really light and not too sweet…we had to doctor them up a bit when we got home.

We finally had a slight break in the heat today.  When I went out to water the flowers after eating I didn’t feel as if I was going to melt so I decided to weed the flowers by the mailbox.  That task has been on my “to do” list for like FOREVER and I’m so glad that it is finally done.  Of course it took WAY longer than I thought it would (doesn’t everything??) but it looks loads better.  Somehow the weeds seem to thrive in all this heat and humidity.

After coming in I was sticky and sweaty so into the shower I went.

The remainder of the day was just plain ol’ fun.  We decided to watch a movie — Mona Lisa Smile (one of our favorites) while eating some appetizers (pizza bites, mozz sticks, mac and cheese bites).

During the evening we went on a ride through Connecticut.  It was beautiful.  There’s nothing like the wind through your hair, the sun fading to dusk, the radio turned high and feeling FREE as you drive with no particular destination.

A good day!

Summer Vacation {Day 4}

Monday, July 25, 2016

Today was pretty much divided into three parts — cleaning, food prep, book club dinner.

Cleaning: as soon as we finished breakfast, we split up and attacked the house — Kimm swept, vacuumed, and cleaned the bathrooms — I did the dishes, wiped down the appliances, cleaned the cat/dog bowls, and cleaned the tub.  We were both dripping sweat when we were done and ready for a shower.

Food prep:  after lunch (veggie burgers and leftover fries/onion rings/veggie lo mein).  Then it was off to the grocery store to pick up a few things for the meal — we were going with an Italian theme.  The menu — spaghetti with mushroom/pepper spaghetti sauce, sauteed green beans with garlic, romaine salad with veggies (cucumber, red onion, grape tomatoes, green pepper), Italian bread with olive oil dipping sauce, lemon cake with lemon glaze.  When we got home I made the cake — LOVE the smell of fresh lemons!  Then it was to work on the rest of the stuff…prepping the vegetables and such.

Book club: our good friend that we do book club with came over about 5 pm.  We IMMEDIATELY broke out the wine and started drinking and chatting while we finished with the meal prep.  The meal was SO GOOD.  We all went to town on everything and declared it delicious.  We continued drinking wine and talking and the night just FLEW by.  I love it when that happens.  We discussed our book (The Happiness Project) and the book chapters that we focused on just fed into talk, talk and more talk.  We finished the evening with our cake and some coffee and more talk and laughter.  Honestly it was really a great evening and we all said again when it was done…we HAVE to do this more often 🙂

Summer Vacation {Day 3}

Sunday, July 24, 2016

I’m just LOVING this sleeping in thing 🙂

After breakfast I tried to get my butt in gear and do SOMETHING productive…so I started to attack my photos.  WHAT a project.  There are so many parts to it all…

First I connected my phone to the computer and uploaded all the most recent photos.

Then I went through that folder (which had approximately 500 photos) and grouped them into the month/event to which they belonged (example…July/Drag Brunch).

Completing that folder took WELL over an hour.

And that’s not even uploading them to Shutterfly, making a folder for photos that I want to print, and deleting photos from my phone.

Trust me, it’s going to be a HUGE, ONGOING project.

But at least it is started.

After lunch we headed out for a shopping expedition.  We wanted to hit up Kohl’s because there was a 30% off coupon in our possession.  I didn’t find much (some underwear), but Kimm was pretty lucky — she got some shorts and shirts!  After Kohl’s we went to Target…picked up some household stuff and looked at the clothes, but no luck for either of us…boo.

By the time we got home we were HUNGRY.  We were both on the same page when we decided we wanted to try out a new Chinese place (the place we had been going to switched business orders and the food was just so-so after that).  We went with the place that our realtor told us was pretty good…turned out, meh — maybe we are just picky!!  We got spring rolls (which were a little greasy), veggie fried rice and veggie lo mein (both a bit flavorless), and sesame tofu (the tofu was soggy, not crispy!!)  BIG SIGH.  It’s tough to look forward to a meal and then be disappointed…

The rest of the evening was just spent relaxing, and we finished it off with an episode of House of Cards.

Summer Vacation {Day 2}

Saturday, July 23, 2016

Slept in…until almost 9 am and it felt GLORIOUS.

Breakfast — toast with peanut butter and jelly, while reading.

I managed to knit one row, get my pictures from my phone uploaded on the computer, and some organizing of them done…SOME.  It will be a LONG process that I can see.

A phone call with my parents before lunch which was simple, but so good…French Toast!

More relaxing (okay, napping again!!) after lunch.

We headed out to drop off some coupons at Kimm’s parents house and visited for a bit, then to the grocery store for a few things and then to Parthenon for veggie grinders, fries and onion rings…those were some onion rings…HUGE.  We could not eat all of it…we’ve saved some fries and onion rings to have with lunch tomorrow.

Now we’re relaxing before watching another House of Cards…probably with some ice cream tonight 🙂

Summer Vacation {Day 1}

Friday, July 22, 2016

Vacation is here!!!!

I made it through all those days of work and now finally have EIGHT days off to just BE.

First stop on the way home…The Donut Dip for surprise donuts for me and Kimm 🙂  A sugared jelly and powdered sugar for me, a sugared jelly and glazed yeast for Kimm…a VERY yummy treat!

Then off to bed…sleep felt SO good.

When I got up, I took a nice hot shower and then we ordered out pizza from Pizza House and watched Chopped…it’s a “first day of vacation” tradition 🙂

Some relaxing (okay, napping! for me) and then we made popcorn and watched an episode of House of Cards…this new season is GOOD.

A simple first day off…just what I like.
