It was another busy night at the hospital.  But I made it through and now I have one day off!!!  (super excited!!)

Izzy’s eye was still swollen when I got home (but no worse than yesterday) and her jaw looked slightly swollen as well.  I was hoping that she would be even better after all night, but again, not really any worse.

I slept until 4:30 pm and then when I got up I noticed that Izzy looked much better!  The eye was definitely less swollen, her jaw no longer looked swollen and her third eyelid had retracted a bit so you could actually see just mostly pupil again, which looks a lot more normal and less scary 🙂

No poop for her today though…

SO HAPPY to have tonight off.

Dinner was excellent…homemade pizza and chocolate chip cookies.

I cooked up some white rice for Izzy for her meals for the next few days.  We did her medicine a little early because we saw there was a severe thunderstorm watch.  The bad weather hit about 8 pm….lots of thunder, lightening, rain and then … HAIL.  It was crazy.

Plan for tonight…popcorn and House of Cards.

Then bed at night time (!!) and I’m excited for breakfast tomorrow.

Unexpected ER Vet Visit

WHEW.  WHAT A DAY.

So work was busy, but not in a totally bad way, it just kept me going until I had to leave.  But of course that is when all the excitement started!

I had given Kimm a quick call before leaving work because she was going to call the vet by 8 am, especially if Izzy seemed worse.  Turns out that Izzy was a lot worse…she woke up with her left eye more significantly swollen and it also looked like her eyeball was going up into her head.  Of course Kimm was a little freaked out, also because she was still pretty lethargic and she was also doing these tics with her head to the right side of her body.

She called the vet and of course being our luck they were not able to see her today…our vet does surgeries on Tuesday and then the rest of the day was booked.  But based on the symptoms that Kimm told the vet tech, they recommended that she be seen by the vet ER.  That place is in Deerfield (about 40 minutes away) so we headed out as soon as I got home.  THANK GOODNESS I had taken my No Doze later in the night and still had my coffee to drink!

We got to the ER, explained why we were there, and were seen immediately (small miracles!)  The ER doctor that we had was really good…nice to us and Izzy, thorough in her exam and explanation, and didn’t gouge us for things we didn’t need.

She was concerned about the eye.  She thought it was what is called a retrobulbular abscess (an abscess behind her eye).  It is actually caused by an infection in the teeth, usually by poor dentition (tartar, plaque, inflammation).  She actually showed us the area in the back of Izzy’s mouth that was red and inflamed.  The weird eye thing was actually Izzy’s third eyelid pulling up over the eye (all dogs have this and it is often exposed when the eye is inflamed…kind of like a protection).  She said that Izzy was actually a “stoic” dog since it was obvious she was in pain (based on when she was palpating her mouth, she yelped!).  She also checked the eye for pressure (a little higher than normal but nothing to be concerned about) and ran some blood work (white blood count normal so no systemic infection).

The plan: antibiotics for 14 days (twice a day) — she said that most dogs that get this will be cured by this alone.  However, if she does not start responding to them in 24-48 hours she may need a follow up visit with an opthamologist and probably would need the abscess drained.  Along with the antibiotics, she told us to continue the flagyl that we had stopped because the new antibiotic can be tough on the stomach and the second antibiotic would help alleviate some of that.  She also gave us a probiotic for her to take (to help with her stomach and get her stools back to normal).  Lastly, a topical eye cream to help ease discomfort in that eye.  She also recommended that we stick with the bland diet for a week (and better to go with cottage cheese and white rice, than the veggie burger or “chicken” patty).

So we headed home after paying about $650!  WORTH EVERY PENNY for peace of mind!!!  We stopped at Geissler’s to get cottage cheese and white rice.  Then home where we got the first dose of all her meds in her.

And by that time I was exhausted.  To bed I headed for a little “nap”!

I was up four hours later and already I thought it looked like her eye was less swollen.  Kimm agreed.  Big sigh of relief.  She also seemed to be acting a little more energetic and like her old self 🙂

We ate dinner (chicken sandwiches, corn off the cob, chips and dip, and chocolate chip cookies!)

Izzy GOBBLED up the cottage cheese…she likes it!

Dishes are done…I’m about to take my shower…and then another short nap.  THANK GOODNESS I only have one more night left!

Izzy pooped for the second time (still soft) and she’ll get her second dose of meds tonight before I go in to work.  I can’t wait to see how she is doing in the morning.  Hopefully she’ll continue to be on the mend.  I can’t wait for her to be 100% back to her normal self.

Best of all, I am so glad that Kimm has a little more peace knowing what is going on.  She looks better and less stressed, which makes me VERY happy!

Looking forward to having tomorrow off.  Fingers crossed for a good night at work.

Happy Memorial Day!

Well, my first full day back in Massachusetts…as usual it went by way too fast.

We were up by 8 am because Izzy was raring to go…not to poop though, just to get up 🙂

Breakfast while reading.

Then some chores — unpacking, doing a load of darks, dishes.

Shower done, a quick snack, and then we headed out to Geissler’s and Stop and Shop.

When I got back I started on our Memorial Day treat — homemade chocolate chip cookies.  The house smelled amazing.

Weather was rainy and drizzly, but we made do with our “indoor picnic” — tomato and basil burgers with cheese and lettuce, corn OFF the cob, roasted asparagus, Stateline potato chips and dip, chocolate chip cookies!  All while enjoying Pearl Harbor, the movie — excellent.  There was even some ice cream at the end too!

Now just finished the dishes, I’m writing my blog and I’m going to try to take a VERY SHORT little nap before heading back to work…boo!

Izzy update: she FINALLY pooped this afternoon!!!  However, she has been fairly lethargic all day and her left eye is swollen and tearing…so we decided to stop the antibiotics, see how she is in the morning and if she is the same, call the vet and see if she needs to come in.  I’m HOPING the eye will be better in the morning (maybe a reaction to the antibiotic, or maybe she got something in it??)

I’m REALLY crossing my fingers for a good night tonight at work.  Not sure how well that will work as it IS a Monday.

I MADE IT!

It was a rough last night on too…busy and staffing was not great.  I was super ready to head out.

I came home and immediately started packing.  It took a bit longer than usual because I had to try on so many things!  I wanted to make sure that everything fit okay.  I actually fit quite a bit in my small suitcase 🙂   Took about 2 1/2 hours total to pack.  Good thing I had my coffee to drink during it.

After that I hit the bed for a little nap.  Kimm was busy…a load of laundry and she mowed the lawn.

Progress on the fence behind us…some of the panels are up.  It looks … okay.  You can definitely tell that it is a home-done job.  I am of the opinion that certain things should be done by those who are experts!

We ordered pizza and curly fries for dinner and watched a movie…Julie and Julia.

And then an after dinner walk and dishes.

Now I’m just chillin’ for a bit.  I’m about to hop in the shower…I think I’m going to shower tonight instead of in the morning…to save some time for breakfast.

I’ll be up at 3:30 am!!!

Tomorrow at this time I’ll be home in Sheboygan…

WOW…only one more night left before being on VACATION!!!

First some interesting news from last night…the supervisor who has been out for her knee surgery will NOT be back on June 1st.  Well, we all knew that.  So the clinical coordinator from the ED will be filling in 3p-11p while the other supervisor is on vacation.  Also, we have another potential new supervisor being trained up.  It is a male, and he has been a nurse for about 2-3 years from what I recall.  He has a good personality for it, just not a lot of clinical experience.  So we shall see what will happen…

Work was actually good…pretty easy.  I stopped at Stop and Shop on the way home and then came home and went to bed.  I slept GOOD!  Thank you AC.

Dinner was excellent — TACO SALAD.

We went for a gorgeous after dinner walk.  The temp was perfect and there was a gentle breeze.  If all of summer could be like that I would LOVE summer 🙂

I’m going in an hour early tonight so as soon as I wrap this up I’m getting changed and heading in…

Boy, I just NEEDED these two days off.

Another really good day.

First, breakfast at the table…I hadn’t had breakfast at the table for 6 days!!  That’s a long time for someone who really loves breakfast 🙂  My fave — toast with peanut butter and jelly, and of course…COFFEE!

I chatted with my mom a bit to firm up plans for Sunday when I arrive, then watched an episode of Survivor (I was two weeks behind!) and then we were off…

…to the movies!!

We saw The Circle.  It was good.  Not good enough to own the movie, or even see it again, but very thought-provoking none-the-less.  Really makes you think about privacy versus knowledge in this technological driven world.  Inspired me to do another social media free month.  BTW…the popcorn and M&M’s were very good!

Back home to put the other two ACs in and then time to relax…I watched another episode of Survivor…now all caught up!  Then I had a sudden burst of energy…changed the bedsheets — FINALLY!!!

Homemade pizza for dinner…yumm!

AND I cleaned the tub!

Then a shower and nap.  Only TWO more nights until I’m on vacation!!!

What a WONDERFUL DAY!!

Today I was able to spend a day focusing on me and Kimm…and I’m so glad that we were able to fit this day in before I go on vacation home to WI because I have been working so many days lately and sometimes the thing that gets pushed to the side, unfortunately, is US time.

But today made up for that!!!

Starters…breakfast out — we went to Partners (actually before we went there we stopped at our new gym to make sure that our cards were activated since neither of us had seen any charges removed from our credit cards…well it turned out the guy who normally sees to all that had been on vacation when we signed up, and he had never been told that we joined, so because of it, we are basically getting a month free!  WOW!! Perfect timing since I KNOW that when I get back from vacation I have to make a serious commitment to get to the gym 2x/week minimum).

But now…back to breakfast.  I got the Belgian waffle since I had a craving, and Kimm got the veggie omelet with potatoes and rye toast on the side.  Plus we both got coffee.  So…about that coffee.  For me it was just fair.  I think I am just WAY to used to making my coffee EXACTLY how I like it at home with my flavored creamer.  I could not get it to taste great.  When I finally got it to taste somewhat okay, it was too cool so I asked the waitress to warm it up in the microwave, which she did, BUT…SHE ALSO ADDED MORE COFFEE TO THE POT!!!!  I know she was trying to be nice, but this COMPLETELY messed up my coffee/sugar/creamer ratio I had just gotten so-so.  I barely drank any of the coffee.  Sad face.  The waffle was just okay.  Nothing spectacular.  Kimm’s omelet was pretty good but her potatoes on the side were horrible….undercooked and covered with some kind of crazy spicy seasoning.  She did love that rye toast though.  I don’t know, everyone raves about this place, but we have just found it to be so-so.  But…it was nice to spend time out together 🙂

We came home for a bit and I took a much needed shower and then watched DWTS (Bonner voted off).

And then it was off to Barnes and Noble (actually first it was to Sears to pick up a new AC…we had put our old one in when we got home from breakfast and it was not working properly…so we just up and ordered a new one as the temps were going to reach over 90…NEED that AC to sleep).

Then to Barnes and Noble…nice just sitting in the cafe, reading books, and sipping on frappacinos (Kimm — smores, me — dark chocolate mocha) and munching on sugar cookies!

Back home again to put the AC in and then some relaxing (me reading, Kimm on the computer).

When we were finally hungry again we ordered out — Parthenon — veggie grinders and fries….that meal was SO good.  We ate while watching our movie from Netflix (Money Monster — which was OKAY).

All in all…a SUPER GREAT relaxing day.  I could not have asked for a better FULL day off!!!

I’m done with my 5 days in a row!!!!!

Finally a night off 🙂

We spent the night at Kimm’s parents house celebrating a belated Mother’s Day for her mother.  Good food — pizza and curly fries, and CAKE!

Fun to just sit and watch a movie (Mr. And Mrs. Smith) without worrying about having to get ready for work!

And super great just knowing that I will be able to go to bed at nighttime!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE having nights off.

Yay!!!!  Getting into the home stretch.  Last night was honestly not too bad.

Home and bed.

When I got up, the neighbors behind us had started putting up the fence posts.  Slow going on their end.  Of course they are stepping all over our yard and there is a lot of excess dirt everywhere.  Both of us are like, “what possesses people to think that you can just do that to your neighbor’s yard???”  SIGH.  Hopefully the fence will be up in the next couple of days and we can take a look and see what kind of repairs we might need to do on our side of the fence.  At least we’ll have a nice fence to look at.

Dinner was “chicken” sandwiches and fries.  Fudge for dessert of course….all done with the peanut butter fudge…sad face.

The after dinner walk was nice…this gorgeous gentle breeze blowing that was so beautiful.

Now I’m writing blogs, then to shower, hopefully a small nap and then to work.

I made it through my long 12 hour hump day.  8p-8a.  DONE.

I was able to text my mom to say a quick “Happy Mother’s Day” before she went to church.  And on the way home from work I stopped and got my sweetie and me each a jelly donut as our Mother’s Day gifts!  Yep, being a fur-mama SO counts 🙂  We love those babies so much…even though they can also drive us crazy as well.  But what would we do without them??

I was SO ready for bed by the time I got home so after eating my WONDERFUL donut…seriously SO SO GOOD…I headed right to bed.

Dinner was quesadillas, followed by a walk and then I was able to shower and call my mom.  Always nice to HEAR your mom’s voice on Mother’s Day.

I ended the night by sending a text to Kimm’s mom, wishing my second mom a Happy Mother’s Day…we’re going over to their house on Tuesday evening to have pizza and watch a movie to celebrate.

Only two more nights left!
